How to factory reset an iPhone? Step-by-step guide and don't forget to back up!

Jak resetovat iPhone do továrního nastavení? Návod krok za krokem a pozor na zálohu!

Restoring an iPhone to factory settings is not only for completely erasing data but also serves as a solution for iOS system issues, such as when the phone freezes or shuts down unexpectedly. The process is not complicated – all you need is your Apple ID password and to follow the precise steps. Resetting your iPhone doesn't necessarily mean losing all your data if you back it up beforehand. After restoring to factory settings, you can re-upload your data from the backup, so you won't lose contacts, photos, or other important files.

Why back up your iPhone before a reset?

Backing up data on your iPhone protects you from loss. If you are not restoring your iPhone because of a sale and want to keep your data, don't forget to back it up. First, ensure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer or MacBook, which will allow data synchronization between devices.

How to update iTunes? Open iTunes on your computer and in the menu bar, select Help -> Check for Updates. If a new version is available, follow the installation instructions.

How to back up data from iPhone?

Once you have verified the current version of iTunes, you can start backing up. There are three ways: using iCloud, a MacBook, or a PC.

Backing up using iCloud

  1. Ensure you are connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings.
  3. Tap on your name and select iCloud.
  4. Turn on iCloud Backup (the switch will be green).
  5. Tap Back Up Now and allow the process to complete without interrupting Wi-Fi.

Tip: If you don't have enough iCloud space, you can purchase 50 GB, 200 GB, or 2 TB of storage directly in your iPhone Settings.

Backing up via MacBook

If you have macOS Catalina or later, use Finder. For older versions (macOS Mojave and earlier), use iTunes:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your MacBook using a USB cable.
  2. Open Finder or iTunes, select your device, and click Back Up.

Backing up via PC

If you are using Windows, open iTunes, connect your iPhone using a USB cable, select your device, and in the Summary section, click Back Up.

Restoring iPhone to factory settings

Once you have completed the backup, go to Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone and choose one of the options:

  • Erase All Content and Settings: You will see a summary of what will be erased. After confirming, enter your Apple ID and wait for the process to complete.
  • Reset: This option allows you to restore only selected settings, such as network, keyboard, home screen layout, or location and privacy, without erasing data.

After selecting an option, you will be asked to enter your Apple ID.
